Certificate in Clinical Research in Neurology
About the EAN Certificate in Clinical Research in Neurology
The Certificate in Clinical Research in Neurology (CCRN) is a two-year programme designed to equip early-to-mid career neurologists and clinical researchers with the knowledge and skills to design, conduct, analyse, and publish rigorous clinical research in neurology. It combines onsite workshops, online courses, and hands‑on working group sessions, culminating in certification at the annual EAN Congress.
Throughout the two-year programme, a distinguished committee of expert lecturers, supported by two dedicated scientific moderators, will provide continuous guidance, respond to participants’ inquiries, offer constructive feedback, and accompany them in every stage of their academic development.
Advance your career in clinical research by being part of the CCRN and learning from experts in the field. The programme is launching in 2026!
What can you expect?
The extensive two-year programme will help its participants to develop major research skills such as:
- Formulating clear, testable clinical research questions in neurology.
- Designing robust study protocols and select appropriate methodologies.
- Navigating ethical and regulatory requirements for clinical research.
- Applying statistical and epidemiological methods to analyse neurological data.
- Integrating translational research approaches from bench to bedside and back.
- Preparing competitive grant applications and manage research budgets.
- Writing, submitting, and publishing manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
The CCRN programme is structured around different core modules:
- Onsite Workshops (WS)
- Online courses (OC)
- Hands-on working group sessions (self-organised virtual meetings, 4-5 participants) (HS)
Course outline

- 5 online courses throughout the programme (on Saturdays, full days, 7h each)
- 5 online hands-on working group sessions (self-organised)
- Group work presentations and graduation in EAN Congress 2028 in Rotterdam
RRFS, Full and Corresponding Individual Members from WHO European region are eligible to apply. First experience in clinical research is of advantage, e.g. participation in EAN fellowship, authorship of research papers, etc.
All applicants must be an EAN member at the time of application.
Please be aware that you must have an active EAN RRFS, Full or Corresponding Individual membership in order to apply for this activity. Approval of your membership may take up to 10 working days and we advise that you submit your complete membership application at least 3 weeks before the deadline for applications for this activity.
A maximum of 25 participants will be accepted per cohort.
The first edition of the programme will start in Geneva 2026. Application will be open from 9 December 2025 until 20 January 2026. The application link is only visible to EAN members after login.
The following information must be submitted within the online application form:
- CV, including, if applicable, information and proof (e.g., certificates) on first clinical research experience or activities related to clinical research (during university, etc.).
- Motivational letter (1 page max.), which shall include information on the following topics. The questions listed below are intended as a guide for drafting the letter.
1. Personal and Professional Motivation
- Why are you interested in obtaining a Clinical Research Certification?
- How does this certification align with your career goals as a neurologist?
- What specific aspects of clinical research interest you the most?
2. Academic and Professional Background
- What is your current role and experience in neurology?
- Have you been involved in clinical trials, research projects, or publications related to neurology?
- What specific skills or knowledge do you hope to gain from this certification?
3. Contribution and Impact
- How do you plan to apply the clinical research knowledge in your practice?
- How will this certification help you improve patient care, contribute to medical advancements, or lead research projects?
- What unique perspectives or experiences do you bring to this program?
4. Future Aspirations
- How will this certification shape your long-term career goals in neurology and research?
- Do you have any specific research interests or projects you wish to pursue?
- How do you see yourself contributing to the scientific and medical community after completing this program?
The online application form must be completed after logging into your myEAN account. In there the required documents can be uploaded as well.
Free for EAN full individual, corresponding and RRFS members from the WHO European Region.
In the event that the participant does not complete the programme, they are liable to return a fraction of the tuition: €300 (for higher income country participants) and €100 (for lower income country participants).
EAN Congress registration, travel and accommodation will not be covered.
The program includes complimentary lunch and coffee breaks during the workshops held at the EAN Congresses.
Applications will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee members, and the results will be communicated by March 2026.
The reviewers will use a scoring sheet throughout the process and assign a final score to each application, based on an assessment across three areas:
- the motivational letter.
- the candidate’s CV
- the overall impression
In order to obtain the certificate, all of the following criteria must be fulfilled:
- 75% attendance onsite, online and hands-on working group sessions (tracking of the attendance to the OCs and onsite WSs will be done by EAN staff; self-organised sessions by self-organised groups; administration will keep the overview and collect all attendance information).
- Hands-on working group sessions: each peer group will decide on a small research topic that they will work on together. A 5-page summary must be handed in at the end to qualify for the certificate. Each peer group will write one article (per academic year) for EAN news (regarding their topic).
- At the end of the program, each peer group must deliver a 10–15-minute presentation on their project (findings, outcomes, learnings) to obtain the certificate. This will take place online. The peer group work will also be briefly discussed at the beginning of each online course.
- Every member needs to write an additional individual 2-pages summary about their main tasks and topics they especially worked on in the group’s work.
- Each participant will write also a final report for the Scientific Committee at the end of the programme to obtain the certificate.
- Senior Scientific Moderator: Tony Marson, United Kingdom
- Junior Scientific Moderator: Cláudia Santos Silva, Portugal
