The Sleep Health Check is a scientific study by the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) on sleep and health. Using scientifically validated questionnaires, you will receive personal insights into your sleep and wake patterns — directly via the app and without any additional devices. At the same time, you will help improve our understanding of sleep and health and contribute to shaping future health strategies. The study will launch as a pilot project in Austria and will gradually expand to other European countries.

How participation works
- Download the EAN Sleep Health Check App
- Register and get started – the app guides you through the questionnaire step by step
- Complete the questionnaires at the beginning and again after 3, 6, 9, and 12 months
- View your results – personal evaluations are available in the app at any time
Each questionnaire takes about 20 minutes.
Who can take part?
You can take part if you:
- are at least 18 years old
- have a smartphone (Android or iOS)
- speak German or English
- read to take part over the course of 12 months (by filling out the questionnaire once every three months)
Why is this research important?
Sleep affects health, wellbeing, and quality of life – and plays an important role in brain health.
By taking part, you help us better understand how sleep and wakefulness influence people’s daily lives and health across Europe.
In the long term, the insights gained will help improve prevention, care, and health strategies.
Scientific background
As part of the Sleep Health Check, scientifically validated questionnaires on sleep, daytime sleepiness, and quality of life are used, including:
- Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS)
- Insomnia Severity Index (ISI)
- Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)
- SF-36 (health-related quality of life)
- EQ-5D-5L
In addition, information on demographics, health status, and quality of life is collected.
Data protection & scientific responsibility
- Your data will be processed anonymously and used exclusively for research purposes
- There will be no medical examinations or diagnoses
- Data processing is carried out in compliance with the GDPR on secure servers within the EU
- The study is conducted by the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) in Vienna, ethically reviewed, and supported according to the highest scientific standards
