EAN Academic Path

Even though the EAN’s educational mission is to constantly be there for all neurologists – whether experts, mid-career or members of the Resident & Research Fellow Section (RRFS), and whatever their practice is in the public or private sector – we are dedicating resources to build a specific academic path

The reason is that it is often seen as difficult and long with the risk of having neurologists sometimes discouraged when they think of it, even though many of them know it is probably meant for them and it is a beautiful career to embrace.

This is the reason why the Education Committee Chair Nathalie Nasr, together with the EAN Board, EAN President Elena Moro, EAN President-Elect Kailash Bhatia, Secretary General Antonio Toscano, and Scientific Committee Chair Gereon Fink, have put together an academic path, encompassing the following key elements:

The purpose of this fellowship is to support training for European Neurologists in an area of basic, clinical or applied research in neuroscience. The research work must be carried out at a European academic neurological department outside the country of residence. All applications should demonstrate experience/training of clear value to the home department/individual beyond that available in their own countries/institutions.

Research Fellowship

The objective is to provide a well-defined clinical observational experience in a department with recognised expertise in a specific field.
With this programme, neurologists that are still in the process of training, can learn from observing the usual approach in an approved host department, including clinical practice, service structures and/or specific techniques.

Clinical Fellowship

The Programme is designed to empower early-career neurologists and trainees by equipping them with essential skills in scientific peer review.
The 12-month training addresses gaps by creating a structured, mentorship-driven learning experience by pairing participants with experienced editors of the European Journal of Neurology in their field of interest.

Junior Reviewer Training Programme

The programme enables early-career neurologists to connect with Europe’s best clinicians, educators, and scientists in the field. It empowers neurologists in training or at the start of their clinical/academic careers, i.e., mentees, to determine or strengthen their focus and develop their full potential. Simultaneously, it allows mentors to reflect upon and strengthen their mentoring skills, as well as make a valuable contribution toward bringing neurology forward.

Mentorship Programme

Dedicated to early-to-mid career neurologists and clinical researchers, the CCRN is a two-year programme designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to design, conduct, analyse, and publish clinical research in neurology.

The programme combines onsite workshops, online courses, and self-organised hands-on working group sessions, culminating in certification at the annual EAN Congress.

Throughout the programme, participants will be guided by Scientific Moderators and learn from renowned experts in the field.

Certificate in Clinical Research in Neurology

The EAN Science School is for early career neurologists who are interested or already involved in translational research, offering an opportunity to understand its foundations and learn more about the emerging topics in the field. Ideal candidates are clinical neurologists in training who did not yet complete their residency/ clinical speciality training.

Every EAN Individual member can be part of an EAN Scientific and Coordinating Panel.

The EAN Panels aim to coordinate clinical research at a European level, to disseminate good neurological practice throughout European countries, to assist the Programme Committee in organising congresses, to assist the EAN in training neurologists and in supporting continuing medical education, and to produce guidelines according to the latest scientific and evidence levels.

EAN Scientific and Coordinating Panels

This 2-year programme supports leaders and aspiring leaders in neurology by teaching essential leadership skills that are not commonly learned at medical school or in daily practice. It gives participants enough time for personal development, learning and applying new skills, and gaining valuable knowledge from leadership experts and senior neurologists. Onsite workshops, online modules, peer-group meetings and individual coaching for further learning are included, and lead to a certification at the annual EAN Congress.

Leadership Programme

Content relating to the field of artificial intelligence (AI), such as the integration of AI into clinical neurology and the identification of emerging needs, including the education of medical professionals and the formulation of a legal and ethical framework to ensure the appropriate utilisation of these technologies in clinical practice.

Educational options on AI in clinical neurology

EAN’s professional development tool for general neurologists offering over 2,500 neurology-focused resources for independent learning, covering all neurological topics, organised into Fundamental, Advanced, and Expert levels. Various learning materials allow learners at all carer levels to renew and refresh their knowledge of general neurology. Regular webinars round-up the learning experience.
