Microvascular injury and hypoxic damage: emerging neuropathological signatures in COVID‐19

In this paper recently published in Acta Neuropathologica, the authors report neuropathology of two COVID-19 patients.

In this paper recently published in Acta Neuropathologica, the authors report neuropathology of two COVID-19 patients.

In one case, the authors found neocortical infarcts and small haemorrhagic and non-haemorrhagic white matter lesions, suggesting an emerging pattern of characteristic alterations, also observed radiologically. These cases provide further neuropathological correlates to a radiological feature of subcortical white matter microvascular lesions, including microhaemorrhages. The authors claimed that, through future neuropathological studies, the mechanisms leading to tissue damage in COVID-19 will continue to be elucidated, to enable timely and appropriate treatment options.
