Women with epilepsy: What to do about contraception and folic acid supplements?

Epilepsy is one of the worlds most common causes of treatment in pregnancy with teratogenic drugs. Around 0.5 % to 1.5 % of women is treated with antiseizure drugs in pregnancy, and the use is increasing. The last years large collaborative efforts and multinational databases have provided new data on the associations between antiseizure medication and long-term neurodevelopmental outcome as well as data on congenital malformations associated with newer antiseizure medications, risks and benefit of folic acid supplementation and new data regarding breastfeeding and contraception. For the clinicians, it is hard to advice the woman and her family in an individualized, yet evidence-based way. This session aims to identify gaps in guidelines and show data that can fill these in a clinical useful way.
