Gender differences in common neurological disorders

The presentation will offer an overview of structure and the activities of the recently created Coordinating Panel focusing on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Neurology of the EAN. In particular, two projects will be presented: a survey among EAN members on 'Gender differences in neurological disorders' and a mapping of European activities related to sex and gender differences in research. Results of the survey clearly demonstrated that gender differences are important both in rare neurological diseases, and in common disorders such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease and sleep disorders. In the future we should therefore focus on gender differences during residency training and during daily clinical practice. The mapping of European activities, including courses, papers and official guidelines, indicates an increasing interest in the field of gender medicine at large; however, a focus on neurology is still needed and efforts should be made to systematically include sex/gender at all levels of research in Europe. The task force is committed to promote these topics via education, research and awareness.
