Epilepsy Management in Transgender Population: More Research for Better Treatment

There is a huge research gap as regards evidence on treatment of neurological disorders of the transgender population which raises concerns about the adequacy of epilepsy treatment for these patients, as many aspects of management remains unclear due to the scarcity of observational studies or evidence‐based recommendations. There are numerous challenges, e.g. hormonal changes, the interaction between antiseizure mediction and gender‐affirming hormone therapies, existing comorbidities, e.g., loss of bone mineral density, depression, and the coexistence of HIV which might give rise to interaction between antiseizure medication and antiretroviral therapy. Therefore, future research on epilepsy care in the transgender population is urgently needed.
