The BioMed Alliance was founded by four major European academic medical societies: European Cancer Association (ECCO), European Respiratory Society (ERS), European Society of Cardiology (ESC), European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). Established since December 2010 as a non-profit association and registered in Belgium.
Reasons for founding the BioMed Alliance are: growing concerns by European scientists that we are losing international competitiveness due to insufficient funding, complicated and excessive administrative burdens on scientists applying and/or receiving EU support, lack of influence of active scientists on European research plans and their implementations as well as concerns over the fragmented European science funding in the health area.
The Alliance for Biomedical Research in Europe (BioMed Alliance) is the result of a unique initiative of leading European medical societies that together include more than 400,000 researchers and health professionals. The BioMed Alliance is committed through its actions to promote excellence in European biomedical research and innovation with the goal of improving the health and well-being of all European citizens.
Prof. Gunhild Waldemar of EAN is a member of the Board of Directors of the BioMed Alliance.
